The Hong Kong Educational Publishing Company was founded in 1979 specifically to publish textbooks and educational books for primary and secondary schools. It was set up as a direct outcome of the commitment of its parent company, The Commercial Press, to the promotion of education and enlightenment. Today, the company has become one of Hong Kong's leading local publishers.

In the more than 20 years since its inception, the company has introduced many innovations in the subject matter, variety and production techniques of its publications. It now publishes books dealing with arts subjects, mathematics and science, Putonghua, art and handicrafts, and moral education. The type of book published includes not only textbooks but also a variety of extracurricular reading and reference materials. Traditional printed books are now complemented by electronic products.

To meet the demand for IT education and e-learning, a web page called "CyberLearning" was introduced as early as 1999. Since 2001, this web page, together with "The Commercial Press Education Website", has been providing teachers and students with comprehensive online educational resources. Recently, the Commercial Press Ltd - Educational Resources Centre was set up to provide even more comprehensive support and service for the local education scene.

The Hong Kong Educational Publishing Co. also actively participates in local social, cultural and educational activities. For example, with its parent company it co-organizes the annual "Book Report Competition for Secondary School Students", with the aim of fostering a greater spirit of learning and enquiry among students.

Since the turn of the century, education in Hong Kong and the way people learn have both been undergoing unprecedented changes.
