In this new IT era, The Commercial Press has pioneered
electronic publishing through the application of digital technology.
The rapid popularization of e-business and Internet applications
has transformed the way the company utilizes its abundant published
resources, and the way in which this wealth of material is presented
and communicated to readers.
By using the secure Digital Rights Management (DRM)
platform and the well-proven Security Electronic Transaction (SET)
system, readers can now pay for online reading of the classics,
as well as quality publications of historical, cultural, social,
educational and practical value published by The Commercial Press
and its associates. Different kinds of online dictionaries with
multiple search functions are also available.
Our company is committed to developing language
databanks and to establishing a cultural and educational network,
with the aim of promoting a revolution in reading and learning.
Back in the mid-1990s, plans were laid to develop a massive language
database; relevant experience, technical skills and qualified personnel
were gathered. Building on this foundation has led to the current
successful introduction of a Chinese word database, an English-Chinese
bilingual database, a classical verse database and a database of
useful sentences and paragraphs for primary and secondary students.
Successive bilingual databanks are in the pipeline, with the ultimate
aim of producing a comprehensive "Knowledge Mega Bank".
The key purpose of the "Commercial Press -
Education" website is to provide learners with multimedia,
interactive study courses, with the rich resources available in
the company's various databases being accessed by means of a user-friendly
platform. The first phase of this program focuses on the learning
of Chinese and English. Several websites have been successfully
launched thus far, including a Chinese language database, as well
as websites for learning Chinese and English languages and computer
science.
Print-on-demand (POD) is a new form of publishing
that has arisen as a result of electronic printing technology developments.
It makes possible the printing of small quantities of books, giving
the flexibility to provide, on demand, books which are no longer
in print. At present, POD service is available for invaluable, out-of-print
academic works originally published by The Commercial Press prior
to 1949. Over 1,000 such titles will eventually be available.
